Spirit of Barbados

2551

Barbados in Spanish means “the bearded man” . However, you are more likely to meet a man with dreadlocks than a bearded one. I had spent 10 wonderful days in Barbados at the beginning of this year. Although I was lying on the beach and reading books most of the time, the energy that this place has can’t be ignored. I would love to introduce it to you.

Ocean

“The ocean has no back doors”

is a saying that the grandmothers of Barbados tell their grandchildren. And I don’t wonder why. Barbados is an island that is surrounded by the powerful Atlantic ocean from one side and by the beautifully blue Caribbean sea from the other. It is not really a part of the Small Antilles. Because of the distance between Barbados and the nearest island, and because of the strong streams that the ocean has, it could be very dangerous to swim far from the shore. To my big surprise there were horrifyingly big waves, that you should be aware of, so you don’t get drawn or sunk your mobile phone just like I did. Fortunately, no one complains about staying closer to the shore, because the view you get from the beaches of Barbados is unbelievable. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful ocean view in the world. You should stay on the shore until the very end of day, to see to most colorful and romantic sunset ever. That’s when you realize, you are enjoying the real paradise.

Nature

I have visited one of the paradises before. The caribbean island Saint Lucia. Maybe you think that the island of the caribbean sea look approximately the same, that’s what I thought too. But there were obvious differences between them. Saint Lucia is a volcanic island, which means it’s sand is dark and that makes the sea darker too. On the other hands the sand of Barbados is soft and white and when the sun shines on the sea it becomes sky-blue. The only rainforest that you can see on Barbados is on the Cherry Tree Hill, however the whole Saint Lucia is a rainforest. Although there are no cherries on the Cherry Tree Hill, you can enjoy an astonishing view on the land of Saint Andrews. Barbados is more of a grassy country. Besides grass they grow sugarcane and sweet potatoes. The sugarcane is being processed on Barbados since the times of the British colony. They also make the famous Mount Gay rum out of it, which has been exported to everywhere in the world. So if you would like to try the taste of Barbados, just find the right bar somewhere in your neighborhood. If you are on Barbados you definitely have to taste the famous rum punch, banana bread or a fresh fish from the fish market in Oistins. There is one thing that the caribbean island have in common - the nice, beautiful people.

People

The thing that I realized at first, was that the Barbadians have time for everything. They don’t rush, which was a shock after coming from the western Europe. They move slowly so they don’t sweat in the hot, tropical weather. At first, I was really annoyed by it, but then I realized that there is finally no need to rush anywhere and we can enjoy the slow flow of life. These helpful, nice people live in small houses in cities like Bidgetown, Bathsheba, Oistins, or they live in small villages, where you can find only two directions of the public transport - to the city, from the city.

Ocean

“The ocean has no back doors” (Oceán nemá zadné dvere.)

Aj ja som si to myslela, no rozdiely medzi St. Luciou a Barbadosom boli neprehliadnuteľné.

People
